Why Apple Pay, PayPal and Google Pay orders never see your post-purchase offer
Shopify only shows the one-click post-purchase page when the first payment was a credit card. Here is the full list of exclusions, and how the thank-you page reaches the buyers it skips.
2026-10-07 — AbakiraShopify doesn’t show the post-purchase page when the buyer paid with Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal or another wallet. It isn’t a bug in your upsell app and no setting will change it. The one-click page works by charging the same card a second time without asking for details again, and Shopify only allows that when the first payment was a credit card entered at checkout. Everyone else goes straight to the thank-you page, which is where you can still reach them.
The full list, from Shopify
Shopify’s developer documentation lists the cases where the post-purchase page won’t display (About product offers, Limitations):
- the buyer checks out with an installment or wallet service, and Shopify names Klarna, Affirm, Afterpay, Apple Pay, Amazon Pay and Google Pay
- the first purchase was made with a gift card or “any payment method other than a credit card”
- the order has duties, or uses multiple currencies
- the order has no shipping address, which covers digital products and local pickup
- the order is for local delivery
- the order is under $0.50
- the order wasn’t placed through the Online Store channel, so POS orders are out
- Shopify is under extreme load, during a big flash sale for example, and order creation is delayed
PayPal isn’t named, but it falls under “any payment method other than a credit card”. So do bank redirects such as iDEAL, cash on delivery and bank transfer.
Why it matters more than people expect
The share of skipped orders depends entirely on how your buyers pay, and it varies a lot between stores. A US store selling to desktop buyers who type in a card might lose a small slice. A mobile-heavy store where most people tap Apple Pay can lose most of its orders. One Dutch store we work with has roughly four buyers in five paying through iDEAL, a bank redirect. For them the post-purchase page was close to irrelevant.
You can work out your own share without any app. Export last month’s orders, look at the payment gateway column and count what isn’t a card. That number tells you how much of your traffic a one-click offer can ever reach.
It also changes how you read your results. If half your buyers never see the page, an offer accepted by one buyer in ten of those who saw it is doing twice as well as a “conversions divided by all orders” figure suggests.
The thank-you page is shown to everyone
Every buyer reaches the thank-you page, wallets, PayPal, gift cards and bank redirects included. That makes it the natural place for an offer aimed at the buyers the first page skipped.
Two things decide whether it actually works.
Who the offer is aimed at. The thank-you page also sees the buyers who already went through the one-click page. Showing them the same offer they just declined is wasted space. In Post Purchase Upsell Abakira, a thank-you rule can target “never saw the one-click page”, which is exactly the wallet and PayPal group. That rule is available on the free plan.
What the button does. Most thank-you offers open a new checkout. That’s a second order, a second payment and usually a second parcel. Our thank-you rules can instead add the item to the order that already exists. A buyer who paid by Apple Pay taps the offer, the line joins their order at the discounted price, and they’re sent to Shopify’s payment page for the difference only. One order, one picking slip, one label.
The difference is paid on that page. Editing an order creates a balance due, and Shopify provides a link to settle it; nothing is charged to the wallet in the background. So the thank-you page asks for one more tap than the one-click page does, which is the price of reaching buyers the one-click page can’t.
How to test it
A test order with a card will show you the one-click page and hide the case you’re trying to check. To see the thank-you offer the way a wallet buyer does:
- Make sure your app is selected under Settings → Checkout → Post-purchase page. Shopify only runs one post-purchase app per store.
- Place a test order paid with a method that skips the page: a gift card, a manual payment method, or PayPal in sandbox mode.
- Confirm you land directly on the thank-you page and that the offer shows.
- Tap it, then open the order in your admin and check that the line is on the same order.
