How to switch post-purchase upsell apps without rebuilding everything
Shopify runs one post-purchase app at a time, so the switch itself is one setting. What carries over, what stays behind, the order to do it in, and how to keep both apps running while you compare.
2026-10-07 — AbakiraSwitching post-purchase upsell apps on Shopify is mostly one setting. Shopify runs exactly one app on the post-purchase page, picked under Settings → Checkout → Post-purchase page, so there’s no overlap and no gap: the next order goes through whichever app is selected. The work is elsewhere. Your offers are configuration that has to be recreated, the thank-you and order status pages are built from blocks you place yourself, and your old numbers stay in the old app. Done surface by surface, with the old app still installed, it’s reversible at every step.
Before you touch anything
Write down what you have. Open the old app and note every funnel: which product triggers it, each offer in order, the discount, what happens after a yes and after a no. People regularly find an offer they forgot they’d set up.
Then take screenshots of your numbers: acceptance rate per offer and revenue from upsells over the last 30 days. Analytics live in the app that recorded them. Once that app is gone, so is your benchmark.
The four surfaces, and how each one moves
Post-purchase apps often cover more than one page. Each one is switched differently.
The one-click post-purchase page. One setting in Shopify’s checkout settings. Select the new app, and the next eligible order sees its offers. Select the old one again, and it’s back. Nothing needs uninstalling.
The thank-you page. Since Shopify retired Additional Scripts on that page, apps add their offers as blocks in the checkout and accounts editor. Both apps’ blocks can sit on the page at once, which is useful for a short side-by-side check but confusing for buyers if it lasts. Add the new block, check it on a test order, then remove the old one.
The order status page. Same editor, same principle, separate page. It’s easy to forget because you rarely look at it, but buyers reach it from the confirmation email.
Checkout blocks, on Shopify Plus only. Same editor again, and the same rule: add the new block, test, then remove the old one.
A sensible order
The merchant who moved to us most recently did it one surface at a time, starting with the thank-you page. It was the least risky place to start: no payment happens there and nothing in the checkout can break. They kept paying their previous app until our figures on that page could be compared with the ones they’d written down, and only then moved the next surface.
That’s the order we’d suggest to anyone:
- Thank-you page.
- Order status page.
- The one-click post-purchase page.
- Checkout blocks, if you’re on Plus and use them.
Give each step enough orders to compare, not enough days. A store with 50 orders a day can judge a thank-you offer in a week. A store with five can’t.
What doesn’t carry over
- Historical analytics. Screenshot them.
- A/B test history. A test restarts from zero in the new app.
- Wording you tuned over time. Copy your offer titles and button texts word for word into your notes; they’re the cheapest thing to lose.
Things to check on day one
Discount stacking. If an automatic discount or a code from the original order can combine with your upsell discount, decide which one should win before a buyer finds out for you. Then place a test order with a code and check the price on the added line.
SKUs, if a warehouse ships your orders. A new app may push upsell lines differently. Every upsell product needs a SKU your warehouse knows.
Who sees what. Wallet and PayPal buyers never see the one-click page. If your old app reached them on the thank-you page, make sure the new setup does too.
We’ll do the rebuild for you on a paid plan
If you’re coming from another post-purchase app and take a paid plan with us, we rebuild your funnels for free. Send us your current setup, screenshots are fine, and we’ll recreate the offers, the yes and no branches and the thank-you rules, then tell you what to check. You keep your old app installed until you’re happy with what you see. Write to support@abakira.com or use the chat inside the app.
There’s more on what moving actually involves. Post Purchase Upsell Abakira has a free plan that runs on a live store, if you’d rather try it yourself first.
