Post-purchase upsells with a Picqer warehouse: the extra item in the same parcel
How Post Purchase Upsell Abakira and a fulfilment warehouse on Picqer work together so an item accepted after checkout ships in the parcel the buyer is already waiting for.
2026-10-07 — AbakiraA Dutch direct-to-consumer brand moved its post-purchase offers to our app in late September 2026. Its orders are shipped by a fulfilment warehouse that runs on Picqer, and the brand had one firm requirement, in their words: “We never want a postpurchase upsell to be a different order. Always in the main order.” A second order is a second parcel, and they pay for every parcel. This is how the app and the warehouse share the work so the accepted item ends up in the box with everything else.
Why the thank-you page carries the offers here
Most of this brand’s buyers pay with iDEAL, a Dutch bank redirect. Shopify only shows the one-click post-purchase page when the first payment was a credit card, so iDEAL buyers go straight to the thank-you page. For this store, that page is where most of the upsells happen.
A thank-you offer here doesn’t open a new checkout. It edits the order the buyer just placed: the buyer taps, the line is added at the offer price, and Shopify’s own payment page asks for the difference. One Shopify order, now with one more line.
The part Picqer needs: time
Picqer imports a new Shopify order within seconds of payment. A buyer reading a thank-you page takes longer than that. So the app’s first job is to keep the order away from the warehouse until the offer has had its chance.
Shopify lets an app put a hold on a fulfillment order, and a held order isn’t released to the warehouse. On a store connected to Picqer, the app does this:
- It holds the order as soon as the thank-you page loads, a few seconds after payment. On the one-click page Shopify already holds the order itself, and the app holds the new fulfillment order as soon as an acceptance is recorded.
- It keeps the hold for up to ten minutes, which is the window a thank-you offer gets to land.
- It holds the added line too. An item added after checkout goes into a new fulfillment order that Shopify creates without a hold. The app finds it and holds it straight away.
- It releases everything together. Fulfillment orders released one after the other, even a second apart, let the warehouse import in between. Released together, Picqer imports one complete order.
When the order is already in Picqer
Sometimes the warehouse has the order before the item is added. Picqer accepts new products on an order only while it’s in “concept” status (Picqer API, Orders). In that case the connector adds the line directly in Picqer, using the API key the merchant gave it. It only adds what’s missing: it compares what the Shopify order holds for that SKU, upsell included, with what Picqer already has, so the buyer never gets two of something they bought once.
If Picqer refuses an addition, the app records Picqer’s own error code and message against the order number, so the merchant can see which order needs a look and why.
Only paid items go to the warehouse
A thank-you offer that adds a line creates a balance on the order. Until the buyer pays it, the app doesn’t tell Picqer anything about that line. Once Shopify shows nothing left to pay, the line goes to the warehouse. A buyer who taps and walks away without paying doesn’t leave an order that ships partly paid: after 90 minutes the app removes the unpaid addition and puts the stock back.
What the merchant sets up
- Connect Picqer in the app’s settings by pasting a Picqer API key. It’s stored encrypted and never shown again.
- Give every upsell product a SKU the warehouse knows. Picqer matches lines by SKU.
- Build the thank-you offers for the buyers who skip the one-click page, which on an iDEAL-heavy store is most of them, and switch their delivery to the existing order.
- Talk to the warehouse about new orders. If they can keep new orders in concept for a few minutes before processing, an addition always has an editable order to land on.
- Place a test order, accept the offer, and open the order in Picqer: one order, with the added line on it.
The general version of this, for any warehouse system, is in why a post-purchase upsell can ship in a second parcel. The Picqer connector is on the Scale plans of Post Purchase Upsell Abakira. If your warehouse runs on something other than Picqer, tell us which one.
